Game Announcement: Blackboard Ponies is an Adorable Hand-Drawn Platformer with a Pony Protagonist, Coming to Steam this Year
Blackboard Ponies is a 2D Platformer where you play as a pony wreaking havoc on a classroom blackboard, developed by a two person team from Austria. The game’s prototype was originally created as an entry to the Tiny Horse Game Jam #2, a community game jam focused on making small horse games within just a month of work.
Blackboard Ponies is now coming to Steam as a more complete experience, though the game will very much stay moderate in scope. A concrete release date hasn’t been announced yet, but game designer Angela Hanko tells me that the team firmly plans to finish and release the game this year.
My regular readers will know this refrain but I LOVE IT WHEN PEOPLE MAKE TINY HORSE GAMES AND FINISH THEM! Our niche is so plagued by first time devs announcing massively unrealistic projects only to be bogged down in scope creep hell to never be heard from again that when I see something like Blackboard Ponies, i.e. a first time developer just making a small and feasible game that happens to be about horses (or ponies in this case), I want to just give them all the love and support in the world.
Like I realize “pony platformer about bringing color into the world” wasn’t on all of your mental “dream horse games you want to exist” list, but I cannot stress enough how important it is for developers to make and finish small games, and if that means we get small cute horsie experiences out of it, that is a much, much bigger net positive for our entire genre than yet another realistic-looking multiplayer open world game with 10 years of upcoming features planned but zero actual ability to deliver. Your support means the world to small games like this one, whether it’s by wishlisting, eventually buying, playing, reviewing, spreading the word, or following them on social media and leaving nice comments on their posts.
