Recommended: "How do we animate horses from scratch?" – Insights from Equinox: Homecoming

I hope you’ll forgive me for what’s essentially just a “hey look, I’m doing my job!” post, but as it turns out I think my job (i.e. horse game consultation) is really fucking cool and I get to brag about it a little bit sometimes, as a treat.

I’ve already revealed that I work for promising upcoming murder mystery horse MMO Equinox: Homecoming. Today, Equinox published a dev diary I helped write showing some insight into concrete improvements on their horse animation that they made following my feedback. Find the complete article (including gifs of the individual animations!) right here on Steam.

This may look like insignificant details to some people, but for me personally (and hopefully for my readers?) having such concrete before and after evidence that my input has helped a game’s dev team to avoid having their horse’s knees impossibly bent while carrying weight is actually incredibly cool and valuable.

Is the “after” animation (on the right) perfect? I don’t think so, I followed up with another detailed feedback document and I don’t know how much of it can be implemented before the Early Access launch that’s just a week away now. But I sure find it a noteworthy improvement and I’m incredibly proud and grateful that this is what I do for work nowadays.

If you’re interested in giving Equinox: Homecoming a try once it launches into Early Access on May 8th 2025, make sure to add it to your wishlist on Steam.
